What is a retaining clip for?

A few weeks ago I was changing out the cartridge for my Moen shower faucet due to a leak. Of course I lost the retainer clip behind the shower wall-the guy at the plumbing supply store told me I could use the faucet without it as long as I was careful while I waited for the new clip to ship. I put the faucet back together with the new cartridge and there was no leak. So tonight I put the retainer clip in, turn the water back on and it’s leaking even worse than before! I took it back out and nudged the cartridge forward a hair- no leak. So can I leave the retainer clip off? What does a retainer clip do? Thank you.

Author: NoHub (MA) you need that clip in there, the cartage could pop out under pressure.

Author: bruceb3 (MI) With high pressure, that cartridge would really hurt when it flies out and hits you in the chest. Retainer clip "retains" the cartridge.
