 Rodent Guard for downspout drains
Author: sum (FL)

Down here in Florida it's very common to have rodent guards on roof vents. Basically it's nothing more than a wire mesh wrapped around the top of the vent pipe, to prevent rodents or birds from crawling or dropping down the pipes.

I have also seen rodent guards being place at the end of downspouts and dryer vents.

I am in the process of extending a downspout. Currently it runs from the gutter, then turn horizontal for about 18" and ends, when it rains very hard, lots of water comes down and floods the ground there.

I have dug a trench from the end of the downspout for about twenty feet to an area with a gentle slope down. I will run a 3" PVC pipe from the end of the downspout to that area. There will be a 90 degree elbow connected to the 3" PVC pipe, and into the 90 degree elbow is a downspout adapter that changes from the rectangular aluminum downspout to the round PVC.

At the other end of the PVC pipe it will be about 6" below grade. Instead of letting it daylight there on that gentle slope, I plan to dig a 36" diameter hole abou 24" deep. then fill the hole with gravel. So the pipe will be buried in gravel.

I am wondering if I need a rodent guard at the end of that pipe if it's buried in gravel? I don't know if rodents or chipmonks or whatever will dig down and get inside?

I don't think you will need a rodent guard but you might want to install a screen for dirt and/or rocks.
