 Kitchen Tailpiece Leak
Author: ryane (NY)

Good evening all.

Wondering if anyone had some suggestions...

Just finished connecting everything in the photos. Everything working well but getting a leak rather quickly around the end of the tailpiece and s trap connection. The sink is draining somewhat slowly as well. The only thing not new is the galvanized drain pipe. The drain hasn't had water run through it in a few months.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Ryan

replace the 'washer' and retighten

ps. you need an Air Admittance Valve (studor vent) as 's' traps are not code compliant

those type joints are not really troublesome.
take it apart, make sure the washer is not installed upside down (yes it does happen). the taper faces down.
put a dab of pipe dope and re-tighten.

Something looks a little hinky where the tailpiece enters the nut. Almost like too many ridges. The sharpie line has a little wiggle in it. Maybe just the way the image came out.

i think that is water setting on top of the nut making it look hinky ??

Thanks for the responses. A few follow ups:

- Correct, on the water sitting around the nut/threads.
- Would anyone recommend pulling out the s-trap altogether and replacing with a p-trap?
- Would a AAV be required regardless of s or p trap setup?

Thanks again.

yes, a vent is required for ANY trap

On a long shot I was guessing maybe that was the flanged end of the tailpiece under the nut. I've seen some tailpieces with a little extra shoulder like that.
