Would have to trace the piping, but it could be a "siphon" connected to a recirculaton hot water line. |

Used to make a recirculation device I believe it's mostly a check valve. |

Check valves do NOT have a second pipe connected to them. If you have "rapid" hot water now, remove it and see what happens to the fast hot water. |
