Would have to trace the piping, but it could be a "siphon" connected to a recirculaton hot water line.

Used to make a recirculation device I believe it's mostly a check valve.

Ok thanks... been looking for hours online for a picture of it can’t be found. Can’t figure out why there is a 1/2” line connected to it either. I’m just gonna bypass the darn thing. Haha

Check valves do NOT have a second pipe connected to them. If you have "rapid" hot water now, remove it and see what happens to the fast hot water.
