Price Pfister 23078 Diverter Stem Removal
Author: MonkeyWrench1303 (WA)

I'm working on a valve that when the diverter is closed, we get water from the faucet and from the showerhead. I removed the diverter handle, took off the trim, removed the packing nut. Now I'm stuck! I can't access the packing, I can't get the diverter cartridge out. I tried pulling it, I see a hex nut attached to the valve front and tried to loosen it but the whole valve is loose in the wall and it's copper sweat connections so I'm trying to be reeeeeal careful. Any advice?

You need to unscrew the the diverter body from the faucet to replace the stem. Have someone support the faucet body from the backside, while unscrewing the diverter body. Install support for the faucet as part of this repair.

Put the packing nut back in to prevent damage to the stem body. Remove the stem assembly using a shower socket (sets are inexpensive and widely available). It is best to have the valve partly open when you remove the assembly so that things can't bind up. You can usually fix those with a Price Pfister (Pfister) white nylon diverter washer and a 3/8 L flat bibb washer. What you will probably find is a kit, just be sure it contains the above two items.

Service call went like this: new Lincoln plumbing direct fit replacement wasn't the right size, used the old diverter plunger and the Teflon washer from the new cartridge, reinstalled. Added blocking on back side of valve to secure it in place.
