Gas line for BBQ , Fire Pit and Pool heater
Author: kirschke (CA)

Hello community,

I'm looking to install a gas BBQ and a Pool Heater and am wondering if I can run a gas line above ground along the fence here in San Jose CA. The gas meter is on the same side of the house so I would trench it from the meter to the fence, about 6 feet but then run the long run above ground on the base of the fence all the way back to the heater and tee it off where my BBQ and fire pit sit so I can stop refilling propane tanks. My pool guy says this is OK but I wanted to ask professionals before getting myself into a mess.

Kinda looks like this:

Start of fence ----------------------------------------BBQ---------------------------Pool Heater
Meter |
Fire pit

Thanks ahead for the help here!

No doubt some of the pros on here can answer that but why not get a few estimates from licensed mechanical contractors? they will know the local code and be able to get the permit required to do this work.

You could line up the Call Before Dig locates for the excavation area.

you need to get permission from the gas company.
with all the appliances you are installing, you could be looking at 750,000 BTU and probably more.
you're gas company may not have enough out on the street to satisfy your needs.

and starting May 4th, you will be able to get a permit in San Jose. San Mateo County is still shut down.

Per the Plumbing Code in San Diego, gas lines must be 6" above the ground and you should strap the line to the fence posts for security and to prevent a tripping hazard.
