A couple years ago Our dear son and best friend in a bad attempt to be helpful put silicone and caulk in the drain of our bathtub and it will no longer drain. We quit using this bathtub but would really like to figure out how to unclog it- any suggestions? Is there anything we can do to dissolve the silicone?

It would only affect the drainage if he put it INSIDE the piping, which is highly unlikely.

Then you willprobably have to remove the pipes and replace them. I do not know of anything that would dissolve a mass of silicone and safely wash it away.

I asked my husband for more details and understanding... but basically they scraped off old caulk, and washed it all down the drain when they tried to re-caulk... and it hasn’t drained since.

How fast does the water back up in the tub? Right away or will some water drain before backing up? If some water drains before backing up, the drain piping needs to be cleaned with a snake . No need to dissolve it. A properly sized snake should loosen the blockage and allow it to be washed out through the piping. If water backs up right away, the blockage might be in the overflow tee and other methods of cleaning might work.
