Bathroom Sealant Turning Pink in a Year
Author: 120volts (CA)

I installed three toilets for a customer 14 months ago and came back today for other work. I had used white sealant to the base and noticed today that the sealant on all three toilets were turning pink already!

I've always used DAP 3.0 100% silicon, and I always apply a heat gun to dry any water or moisture completely before applying.

One of the bathrooms has just a toilet and sink so no moisture from showers, etc.

Any ideas?

you mean the caulking has discolored or just has pink on the surface?

Packy beat me to it. I've seen pink mold on silicone, it's not uncommon. Check this link:

Ok. I’m guessing I applied it correctly then, and this is just bacteria growth. Thanks for the link!

After I posted it I found a solution to clean it at least— I experimented at my house where I had a little pink starting in the tub.

I got a bowl of hot water and put some bleach in it. And then I took some toilet paper and wadded it up and dunked it for a second in the bleach and then put the soaking wads on the sealant, soaking wet. It even works on the vertical plains of the shower. I left it on all day long as I went to work and when I got back, the pink was gone and the silicon was like brand new! Bright white. New toy! Thanks, Santa!

The soaked toilet paper wad prevents dissipating the bleach solution and fully saturates the sealant and stays put. This was not my idea. I had googled it. Worked brilliantly!

Anyway, I’m still perplexed why the pink mold would show up at my customers house in just 14 months. I guess bacteria just grows in good conditions. For it. Not us.
