 dwv with in-place fixtures
Author: OrionM (TX)

Hi.

I am about to start a house renovation where I will add some fixtures to existing DWV lines. I assumed I have to isolate that part of the system for the water test. There are two bathrooms, one up stream, one downstream that are on also on the first floor where these additional fixtures will be added (and therefore less than 10' higher than the additions).

For the toilets, do I need to remove them to put a plug in place for the test, or will a test balloon placed in the toilet work? It seems like either: I will crack the porcelain trying to inflate the balloon, or the water will leak lower around the wax ring (or both) if I leave the toilet in place. Likewise, for the sinks, I assume I have to remove the p-trap and put a plug in its place?

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Do not use a balloon in a toilet. Pull all toilets and cap them off.

you only need to test the new work you are doing.
install a cleanout tee at the base of your new work and test from there up.
test needs to be done at the rough stage of the work so no toilet can be installed anyway.

one like this screws into the cleanout tee and inflates with air to seal the piping.
you can then either fill the new work with water or 5 PSI of air.

this screws in where the plug is on the clean out tee.
