 jackhammer in toilet shutoff valve
Author: bam99 (SC)

After replacing the parts in my toilet, I reconnected the supply line and turned on the water. That tiny little valve made such a loud racket that my wife told me to stop hammering the toilet. And the pipe was screeching! Only when I turned the valve to wide open, the noises stopped and all *seems* to be OK. What happened?

The washer in the angle stop might have come loose from the stem. Shut the water supply to the house off and disassemble the valve for inspection(or just replace it with a quarter turn valve).

I would just get an EXACT replacement valve and replace the stem assembly.
chances are the washer will stick inside the valve when you take it apart.
just take the washer out with a tiny screwdriver and replace the stem
note.. it must be an EXACT valve stem...

If the handle says Brasscraft, buy a Brasscraft R-19 angle stop and rob the stem out of it. The sweat R-19 has a brass stem. The compression valves have a plastic stem. Be sure to lubricate the threads and stem with NON petroleum silicone grease.
