I live in an apartment building on the 1st floor (there are 12 floors above me). About every half hour I hear a bubbling sound from the kitchen sink and a stink pervades the kitchen. It sounds like water is coming down at high speed from the floors above us. The pipes under the sink are new metal pipes that go into the kitchen wall. We've called the plumber of the building who says that because we have a trap under are sink it's impossible that smells can get through. Problem is smells do get through. He replaced the trap with a new one but the problem continues. He checked if our drains are clogged by running water in our sink and going somewhere in the basement of our building and he said the flow was good. What could be causing this? Could there be a leak that pools up somewhere behind our wall? I think that the smell though is coming from our drains. I know the plumber says that a trap won't let the smell in but the smell is definitely coming in. I wonder if water coming down at high speed could suck up the water from our trap and open it up? Anyone have any ideas out there. The fact is the kitchen stinks every time we hear the water rushing down from upstairs apartments despite our plumber telling us that's impossible.

Get a "Licensed Plumber" to check if the trap seal is being pulled when all that water comes from the upper floors. You might have to install a drum trap if the seals getting pulled.

put the drain plug in the kitchen sink and put a couple of inches of water into the sink.
that will block any smells from coming out.
leave it like that for a few hours.
if over that period you get no smell then you will know for sure the trap is being syphoned.

All you have to do is look down the drain after it happens to see if there is still water in the trap, or listen in the sink to find out if you can hear water running through the drains.
