 Cracked horizontal soil pipe
Author: JRTPhilly (PA)

Greetings. Newbie here, so please forgive me if this is answered elsewhere.

Need some advice. I have a section of sloped lateral old iron soil pipe running through garage I'm fixing up. One section has already been repaired using Fernco or similar. The whole thing needs replacement and I'll bring in a plumber for same. But... I need to do a temporary "repair" and not sure how to proceed or if it's even possible. I've attached a couple photos. The cracks are long (roughly 4 foot section) and have separated pretty wide. I don't want to cut and repair with PVC, want purely temporary fix. My first thoughts are to use either a wrap/tape kit -or- something like iron paste or a putty/epoxy of some type.

If any pros out there can give me advice I'd greatly appreciate it. Glad I found this site and many thanks to anyone who can share some thoughts.

Here's a photo in case it's helpful. [www.dropbox.com]

Cheers from Philadelphia

For a temporary fix you might try Flex Tape on Amazon. It'll take about the same amount of time to apply as a permanent fix.

You must have a good reason to not want to replace it now, but that is what I would do. Probably cheaper to replace it your self than repair it with tape. Just my thoughts.

need supports added on each side of that band and then a new piece of pipe added.

get three quotes from three licensed/bonded/insured plumbers and go with the one you feel
most comfortable with. cheapest is not always best.

If you are handy and a little mechanical I can see this as a DIY too.

That’s cast iron on both sides of the banded coupling right?

Definitely DIY especially if you already own a sawzall. I have a diamond blade I’ve used to cut thru cast iron at my house in similar situations.

Only complexity I see in addition to the needed supports already mention is at the left side of the pipe where it meets the main stack, is it cracked all the way to the end? If not you will have enough space to cut and use a banded coupling, otherwise you might need a “donut” which will be more complex to remove the old joint and install.

Palm, Please remind me as to what a donut is? Thanks

Srloren I was referring to one of these:
Fernco 44UX-405

The rubber gasket that allows one to connect a pvc pipe to a cast iron fitting.

Thank you to everyone who posted replies. I ended up doing a quick/temp fix using some putty I had on hand and then wrapped and taped. This at least stopped the immediate issue but no way it'll hold up if 2nd floor shower/toilet are used. Have two local contractors coming today. PS, when I went up a ladder to patch I noticed a slight belly at the worst part of the crack/split. Maybe just one degree but maybe that was causing (or worsening) the flow problems and deterioration (?) That's just a guess by this non-pro. Anyway, seems like there should have been at least one additional support and I bet the pro coming in will install it.

Thanks again everyone. Cool site.

do not 'bet'

PAY the pro to install it

almost every CI joint on the horizontal needs a hanger

I think my code say every 4 feet and 18 inches on either side of a no hub coupling.

JRT, have the plumber install a cleanout tee down on the left side of your picture.
you can NEVER have too many cleanouts.
use this kind if they are installing cast iron. if plastic pipe, use the plastic version.
