How much higher can I install a washing machine outlet box
Author: ArthurPeabody (NM)

I attach my washer to the kitchen sink faucet and drain. I want to add an outlet box for it. After I cut out that piece of the wall I find some stuff in the wall just above the washer. I have to put the box about a a foot higher: is that a problem?

Thanks! I realized it was easy to test, so the next laundry day I held the drain hose that high while it drained. Some water remains in the washer no matter how low I place the hose; the higher I put the hose, the more water, so I drain it from the bottom outlet at the end of every wash day. The manufacturer seems to know this: the cycle begins with a draining - it can't be good for it to retain water.

I imagine that there are rubber seals in the pump that are happier when they stay wet. keeps them from drying out so they live longer. BTW, your dishwasher does not empty out completely either.

packy is correct

do NOT drain either appliance 'from the bottom'

they are DESIGNED to retain water

the 'discharge loop' is REQUIRED

ps. the 'typical' washer will pump satisfactorily to a height of 7-9 feet
