you could start by reading the manual that came with the water heater.
Read what the manufacturer recommends and follow that.
Draining and flushing a water heater periodically is good practice that very few people actually do.
If it's been there awhile wouldn't be a bad idea to change out the T & P valve.
Same goes for the flexes. Over time the rubber washers can break down and enter your fixtures.
A bit more involved would be to replace the anode rod.
****Very important to cut power to an electric water heater before servicing.
Very important to turn gas valve OFF when servicing a gas water heater.
