Do push-to-connect fittings for copper pipe work?
Author: ArthurPeabody (NM)

I'm trying to tie into my plumbing to add a washing machine outlet box. The closest plumbing is in a tight spot, a fire danger. I found this [www.homedepot.com] at Home Depot. Do these work well? How big a piece out of the pipe should I cut to accommodate it?

You can use on copper. Cut enough pipe so it will go completely inside the fitting

see the 2 impressions in the center ? you cut just a tint bit more than that amount.
if you don't have room to maneuver a tee into the pipe because there is no play side to side, they make a slip tee for that purpose.

It's Home Depot's photo, not mine. I don't see 'impressions' on it. SharkBite answered: .845 inches; Tectite didn't: the e-mail address on their website rejected mail.

The insertion depth for a proper connection on a 1/2 in. Tectite Push-to-Connect fitting is 15/16 in. This may help you derive the width you would need to cut out. When installing a push fitting in an existing length of copper or CPVC pipe, you may be best suited using a slip fitting in order to allow you some leeway in bridging the gap in the pipe. For your specific application, you may want to look into a slip tee (Apollo Part No. FSBT12SL / The Home Depot SKU 1002-429-534).
