Rotten Egg Smell in Hot Water
Author: shourdl (IL)

We replaced our old hot water heater last month which had an old magnesium anode rod, with a new unit containing an aluminum anode rod. We were told this was likely the source of our horrible hot water smell. We have a well and water softener. The smell is still super bad. What else can we do to get rid of the smell which is a combination of rotten eggs and sulfer? Thanks.

Have you ever had the well water tested to understand your incoming water quality? testing the water at the well output of course, not at the faucet (you have a water softener installed).

replace the aluminum anode rod with:

Aluminum/Zinc/Tin Anode Rods
This particular combination of metal in anode rods is often used when foul odor in water is present. Zinc is a natural anti-fungal element and can help control (not completely eliminate), the growth of iron bacteria which can cause that rotten egg smell. Zinc oxide and zinc compounds are indigestible to micro-organisms such as bacteria. This combo rod is designed to fight some foul water odors that can occur in water heater systems that use aluminum or magnesium anode rods. Please read our FAQ for more information regarding water odor.

Yes. Only the hot water has this smell. We can smell it thru the entire house not just at the faucets.

We purchased this house late May of 2019, The county tested the water at the well and it must have passed inspection. Not sure what their criteria for passing as acceptable would be. We will try testing it again ourselves. Thanks for this suggestion.

Aluminum/Zinc/Tin Anode Rods. I believe our new hot water heater has an Aluminum rod. If nothing else works we may need to replace the Anode Rod again. Thank you for your help.

I think all the county cares about is that the well water will not make you sick or kill you.

if there is something in the water that will harm the plumbing but not harm you, they don't care.

You have an aluminum OEM rod.

You need an Aluminum-Zinc-Tin ALLOY Anode Rod which is DESIGNED to eliminate the specific odor of which you complain.

As I stated before. tongue sticking out smiley
