I have been seeing the hype of magnetic and these days electronic softeners and descalers for over 40 years.

As a matter of fact 40 or so years ago I not only sold some under the conditions that my customers understood that I didn't believe in them as well as they could return them used (many did eventually return them) but I installed one brand supplying an evaporative cooler to one of our warehouses and a larger different brand to my own personal water heater at my home. After a few years I became convinced neither did anything.

Reeves Journal (magazine for plumbing contractors) maybe about 30 years ago had a big article about some major revolutionary "conditioners" that were installed in some major complex. How this was THE latest way to go, blah blah blah. Yet here we are 30 or whatever years later and I see no evidence of major acceptance of them.

I constantly see excitement and hype about the latest brand or model however after a few years I haven't seen any legitimate users who after a few years will still swear that they work as claimed.

So today I'm still a big skeptic of all models and brands of magnetic and electronic descalers and softeners and so therefor we at PlumbingSupply.com refuse to sell them until we see clear evidence/proof that they work, even though we could make some nice profits selling them (especially since they are such a high profit margin product) as there are plenty of people looking to buy them.

Buyer beware. smile

Vic, I believe you are right on. These electronic descalers were installed at the San Onofre Nuclear Plant in North San Diego County at the Water Heaters (2ea 75 Gallon Monsters) and I never thought they did anything to the water that was beneficial.
