 Leveling a shower valve...
Author: Palm329 (VA)

Installed this the other day, then I’ve gotten to looking at it and it’s appearing out of plumb a bit... it’s kinda bothering me so I’m thinking to cut the supply lines, then pound that blocking with a hammer to drift it into position, and then use some couplings to get those supply lines connected again.

How do you all get these valves plumbed up and level? There’s really no easy way to stick a level on the valve... best idea I had was to solder in the riser first and then hold the level on that as I attached the valve to the blocking... of course as I screwed it down things went a little sideways...

Looking for the tricks! Thanks in advance...

kinda hard to make adjustments the way you have that valve anchored.

I have the two 2 x 4's cut slightly longer than they have to be. then assemble the valve keeping the hot and cold
pipes inside the 2 x 4 opening.

then tap the 2 x 4's inward to trap the valve and now screw them in place. now you can secure everything, put in your blocking etc

it just gives you more play

as for how to install a round block into a square opening , well, that's just being fussy and eyeballing everything while holding a level and looking at the screw holes

I would take off the plaster guard and put on the trim piece to see. If the trim piece looks level I wouldn't worry about it. Is the trim piece round or rectangular? I bet you can't tell once the trim piece is on, especially if it's a round trim with a cross handle. If it's a lever hsndle and not pointing at 3 or 6 'O' clock then tweak it level.

cut it out and remove.

make sure the two holes drilled through the studs (where the hot and cold pass through)
are at the same height off the floor. typically 48".

then use couplings and 90's to get it right.
