 Backwater valve
Author: Palm329 (VA)

Since I have my basement floor opened up, and about to have my whole lateral replaced, I got to thinking is this the time to install a backwater valve on the 4” line just in-case?

But then as I researched I read about required maintenance every few months. Im not sure I or any future residents would keep up with that.

Are these valves more trouble than they are worth? Do you all have them in your homes?

Thanks

Unless you really, really need one, then, YES, they are more trouble than they are worth, and can CAUSE sewage backups.

how many years has your sewer line existed?
has it EVER had someone else's sewage back up from the street into your house?
what direction does the sewer flow in front of your house ?
are there houses lower than yours in that direction?

my stack of 10 dollars chips is being placed over the " no backwater valve needed".

Thanks for the info. I won’t install it. My sewer has never backed up, and if it does I believe I have some coverage from my homeowners insurance.
