Best way to stabilize a hose bib line in the middle of the yard
Author: sum (FL)

What is the best way to stabilize a vertical riser pipe for a hose bib in the middle of a yard?

I have already ran 1/2" copper pipe to a spot near it - under the concrete steps, around the bricks deck, under a concrete walkway.

My plan A which is what I typically do is to try and dig a 10" diameter hole about 18" or so deep, and install a pressure treated 4X4 into the hole and pour concrete around it, then run the pipe to the spot, then a 90, then run the copper riser up.

Well turned out the spot I had planned on placing the riser is infested with a tangled up mass of big tree roots. I tried for hours to dig and cut and there is no hope. I gave up. Relocation of the riser is difficult as it seems that root mass is everywhere (even though I am 15' away from the tree trunk).

So I am looking for other options.

I think I can use a long shank wood bore drill bit may be 3/4" or 1" diameter and drill down through the roots. Then pound a 3/4" galvanize pipe or EMT electrical conduit down through the drilled hole into the dirt below. Pound it 24" below and use that as an anchor for the copper riser pipe. Use some sort of clamp to secure the riser to the anchor pipe. Would that work?

Or drill a slightly bigger hole and use a section of those U-shaped unistruct frames they use to run pipes and conduits across overhanging ceilings. They also have pipe clamps to attach the riser.

Any other ideas?

I use a piece of 1" copper pipe as a stake and fasten the water line to it with all stainless steel hose clams.

Would a yard hydrant work?
