venting with cast iron for a sewage pump
Author: jblanc (CA)

The inspector tells me the vent of the pump cannot be ABS uncovered. Either to box it all the way to the roof and through the roof, or put cast iron. Does this make sense? Currently i had put an ABS black pipe to half way by the exterior wall, without taking it all the way through the roof (it's a one story family house) and unprotected.

Is it outside the building?

If outside and unless there's a local amendment,

CA Plumbing Code - "312.13 Exposed ABS Piping

ABS piping shall not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Exception: ABS piping exposed to sunlight that is protected by water based synthetic latex paints."

Also there's another section stating vents need to extend above the roof.

yes, currently we put outside the building by the wall. So from what you say Steve, the cheapest option is to paint it with water based syntehtic latex paint and also bring it up over the roof since right now is only half way along the back wall?

He may NOT be concerned with UV damage, but rather PHYSICAL damage which is why he wants a metallic pipe.
