Puzzled by dual hot and cold faucet cartridges.

Hi,
I replaced the faucet cartridges in an old 1950’s bathroom faucet with Lasco Hot & Cold cartridges #S-203-3.
After getting it all together, the handles don’t operatre like they previously did. Now, the cold turns on clockwise, as before. But to turn on the hot side, I have to turn the handle counter clockwise from 9 o’clock to 12.
Is this just the way it is with dual hot and cold faucet cartridges? Or have I done something wrong.
It’s no big deal, but just curious.
Thanks for any insight.

Sounds like you may have them reversed. Remove the stems try reversing them or turn the cold 180 degrees.

thanks for your reply.
I tried them in each side and still, the hot side only closes and 9:00 and opens at 12:00

what my friend fro CA refers to is to remove a stem rotate it 180 deg and put it back in.
some you can do this with and some not.
this is a delta stem. see the little square tab. it can be inserted to 9 o'clock but if the handles turns the wrong way like yours does, remove it and turn the tab to 3 o'clock.

to go from 9 to 12 counterclockwise would require turning 270 degrees, and since that is a Delta stem it CANNOT rotate that far. You have the stem in backwards for the hot side.

Gentlemen,

I finally figured out what my problem was and will now bite the bullet, fess up to my stupidity, live with the embarrassment, and maybe help some other blockhead.

The confusion confused was that I thought there were more vaiables than there are. I changed sides, rotated the stems 180º and still the handles did not as they should.

Then…

I (finally) realized that for the handles to align properly and 9:00 and 3:00, there is only ONE way the stem can be installed – flat side facing out (A).
And I saw that the grey colored central piece is solid (B so no twisting or turning is possible.

Both Srloren and Packy were correct to advise turning one of the stems 180º, but I was turning the WHOLE ASSEMBLY!

I never realized that with the above set-up, there is only ONE variable, only one moving, adjustable part…. the white color collar that moves independently with the raised upward extension dictating which directions the handles turn.

I turned THAT 180º and all is well.big grin

My face hurts from doing so many forehead-slapping Homer Simpsion “Dohs”
