 Basement drains
Author: mcavinee (OH)

Good Morning: Here is my question. We purchased this older home about 7 months ago and when it rains hard we have water coming through a corner of the basement wall. I dug into the wall seeking the source and found a broken clay tile. This tile must have tyed into a clay tile coming up out of the cement floor at one time I thought. So I started chipping up the floor to follow the tile since a commercial snake would not go through. I followed the tile to another part of the basement where it just suddenly ended and I saw a white perforated pipe with a tee. This pipe goes to two drains and the other section just suddenly terminates with a cover like a grill on it. I am at a total loss how this could be an effective drain. Is this a hack job? Why would my drains just be going back into the basement floor dirt? My only solutions as I see it would be to find the pipe leading through my wall and taking that pipe directly to my sump pump? Need ideas please. Thank you. Mark from Ohio

years ago it was allowed to tie the ground water drains into your sewer system.
now it is frowned upon and in most cases forbidden.
maybe that was your set-up at one time ?
it is hard to give advice about what to do now without seeing the layout.
