 Slip nut water leak
Author: fkim1223 (MD)

Hi,

I have a leak in the slipnut.

I had a blockage, and I had to disconnect the pipes to clean the drainage using an auger. That seems to be fixed, but now I have some leak from the slip nut connectors. Somehow, i have metal slip nuts and the size is about 2.5in od and 2.25 in id. It there is no gasket instead it is sitting on plastic piece which makes it difficult to get out. Maybe you are not supposed to be able to get it out. I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to stop the leak. Can I use thread sealant or teflon tape? Do they sell a gasket for this slip nut? What should be the size? I had a hard time finding the same size metal slipnut at hardware store.

Here is a photo of my kitchen plumbing: [imgur.com]

Thanks

there is no gasket on that type of joint.
just lather it up with a good grade of Teflon based pipe dope and tighten firmly. it should be fine. (get some paste under the chrome nut)

Thank you for the advice. Is the paste typical thread sealant? I bought this from the store. [imgur.com]. Would it work? If not, is there a type or brand you recommend using?

I would like the see that slip nut and joint, because it looks like the "flange" and "bevel" would have to go around the spigot 360 degrees in order to seal it, NOT just in segments like that one appears to.

That appears to be a 2" tail piece coming down from the sink outlet. You are slowing down the waste by reducing to 1 1/2". It is a 2" for a reason i.e. Deep sink or whatever the reason. Normally your drain would not be reduced in size from a fixture to be Code compliant.

sloren.. wow, you have to look twice to make sure that is not a reducing fitting.
it is an optical illusion.
that is a plain old 1 1/2 inch PVC 90 with a 1 1/2 inch street trap adapter glued into it.
