 Open drain line
Author: Ajsjttmom (OH)

Hello all and thanks in advance for any help. Awhile ago the drain pipe for our bathroom sink rusted shut (very old house and very old plumbing). The landlord replaced the old metal pipe with pvc but where that piece of pvc meets the old pipe there is no connection. Both ends are open. I will include pics/video. We smeeled sewer gas for awhile after that everytime water was used in the home. We dont smell it any longer but are wondering if the way he fixed this issue is correct/safe.

I cannot imagine how it could not leak, if is was a drain and not connected, so we need a picture to see what you are describing.

Unless there is some "legitimate" reason for it not being connected, and there is none I can think of, then it is a "hack job".

The "repair" is not legal. Not only the non-sealed connection, but also the sanitary tee on it's back being used as a drain fitting.

This is a health hazard. I would contact your landlord and demand a proper remedy immediately.

Appears the landlord didn’t know how to make the transition from the metal street elbow to the larger pvc pipe?
