Roots can travel quite a distance
Author: sum (FL) This is a outdoor bar sink drain pipe that runs below to a broken pipe with root intrusion. That broken section is over 20 feet from a tree. The roots traveled up the vertical 1-1/2" drain. Just for the heck of it after I took them apart I cut the drains at three places using my chop saw and there are roots all the way through the p-trap up to the tail piece to the sink.

Author: srloren (CA) I have removed roots that were 30 ft. long from and area drain pipe in my front yard. This is maintenance that needs to be addressed every few months

Author: Paul48 (CT) Willow trees can send their roots a lot farther than that. They can make a mess of a swimming pool.
