rebuild/replace element in vernet thermostatic valve
Author: ingenthr (CA)

For the second time in about 6 years, my Altmans (out of business) thermostatic valve cartridge (HFCART2) seems to have failed. It never comes up to the right level of heat.

Question: is there a vendor who would, or is it somehow possible to, replace the thermostatic element on it?

I kept the other failed valve thinking that maybe I'd look into this if it ever failed again in the future. I didn't expect it to happen so soon. The thermostatic element itself is made by Vernet, it would seem.

Thanks much for all of the past help too!

Matt

Try soaking your cartridge in white vinegar for a hour. Then flush the cartridge alternating from full hot to full cold for 2-3 minutes. do this 5 or so times. Apply ONLY silicone grease to the seals and reinstall. For what its worth the HFCART is not Vernet. Their Vernet they used is C9VERCART in 1/2" valves only.

Thanks for the advice!

On the back side of the cartridge, I see Vernet stamped in. You can see it a bit in the image[1] and I took a better pic once before so I could zoom in to see it.

Also, I added a water softener before I last replaced the valve, so I don't think it'd be from hard water stuck in it. And, I did use a silicon grease when installing.

I will give it a shot and will cycle it as you recommend after a thorough cleaning. Hopefully this gets it going. Thanks!

Matt
