 Toilet discharging pipe frozen and broken
Author: MDTNGUYEN (SD)

I would like to know if a toilet discharging pipe can be frozen and burst / broken because of cold weather. I mean I have heard that a sewer line / septic system can be frozen and broken because of cold weather, but I think the difference between a sewer line / septic system and a toilet discharging pipe is that a sewer line / septic system is outside of a house while a toilet discharging pipe is inside of a house. So, can the weather inside a house be cold enough to cause a toilet discharge pipe frozen and burst / broken provided that the house does have heating on.

It makes no difference as long as the pipe is not plugged up so it filled with water.

a tub or a shower has a trap beneath the floor. the trap holds water and can freeze under the right circumstances (even if the heat is on)
the discharge from a toilet just runs thru the pipe and is not liable to freeze unless there is a partial clog or the pipe is sloped backwards. in either of those cases you would notice a problem with the toilet flushing before it ever froze.

Thank you for your reply. But what temperature causes a toilet pipe frozen? Is it at 20 degree? So, how can a house / bathroom be lowered down to 20 degree provided that normal heating is on.

Thank you for your reply. However, the temperature inside a house is unlikely to drop down to level of freezing as temperature outside a house. So, what causes the temperature inside a house to become freezing when normal heating is on?

Still, unpressurized water freezes at 32F/0C. Water pipes in heated rooms can freeze for many reasons:
* The heat wasn't on
* The heat does not adequately circulate into the bathroom
* The heat does not warm up pipes buried in floors or walls
* The outside temperature got colder than usual or stayed cold longer than usual
* Pipe insulation was removed or failed
* Something changed in the basement-a window was left open
* The ground that the drain pipe passes through is wet or flooded for some reason
* Other plumbing changes
