Is the closet ring set to the correct height? Are you on a slab or raised foundation floor? Make sure the closet bend is not over 1/4" above the closet ring. Make sure the toilet bowl sets flat on the floor and does not rock. Use shims to prevent rocking. For insurance, I often use 2 wax rings. Make sure the closet ring is clean, dust free and dry. The first wax ring applied is stretched out to make the wax ring about 1" larger and I place it on the closet ring and with the palms of my hands, pat it down and flatten it just a little. I then place the 2nd wax ring on top and then set the bowl, being careful to let it set in final position slowly. Some wax will protrude from the bowl and I cut it out about 3/8" under the bowl. Clean the wax off of the bowl exterior and under the china bowl edge enough so that I can use silicone caulking to seal all around the toilet except for an inch in the rear of the bowl that would allow a leak to be seen when it happens. Wax rings don't always last forever and the toilet needs to be reset from time to time. Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have questions.

'theoretically' the discharge is akin to a nozzle and the wax ring is merely an odor preventer

Bern...I would add "leak preventer". Good image though.

it is only a leak preventer if it is discharging (not best practice, but ok) into an elbow or short vertical creating 'back pressure'

trust me, if the vertical is 18"+ and the pipe is 4" w/o an obstruction it will NOT leak w/o a wax ring

it will merely stink
