Sink P trap won't tighten properly.
Author: traces95z (Canada)

I'm installing a new bathroom sink faucet. It's all hooked up but the p trap doesn't tighten enough onto the new tailpiece....its snug but I can easily turn it and move it up and down. The tailpiece is 1 1/4" OD, The p trap is 1 1/2" OD with a "fat" washer which measures 1 1/4" ID. Is it not supposed to be completely tight? What am I doing wrong??

Thanks.

just pick up another washer. it should fit tightly around the tailpiece. sometimes you have to force it to fit over the tailpiece.
they are cheap..

any taper faces down.

Well, there's a new one in their already. Are you saying to replace it with the same one? Not sure what that will accomplish....

a 1 1/2 slip joint washer used on a 1 1/2 pipe will snug tighter as you tighten the slip nut.
a 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 slip joint washer will never snug up tighter as you tighten the slip nut. it is just plain too thick.
that is why I said the washer must fit tightly to the 1 1/4 tailpiece.
it should fit so tight that you actually have to force upwards. (this is a good thing)
perhaps an all rubber 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 slip washer will be more helpful.

The tailpiece is 1 1/4"
The p-trap is 1 1/2"
How do I make a tight connection between the two??

you can't

the 'adapter washer' is the only connection

the trap 'should' be 'self supporting', not hanging on the tailpiece

use a reducing slip joint washer. 1 1/2 x 1 1/4.. done all the time.
