 leak at Proflex coupling
Author: Jonf (VT)

I have a slow, steady drip from the copper-side compression clamp on a copper/PVC Fernco Proflex coupling under my kitchen sink. I am a little confused that it's a steady drip coming from a drain/waste pipe. Is there standing water in there? Is this just a matter of replacing the coupling, or are there other things I should be aware of before taking things apart? I had tightened the clamp when I first noticed the issue in November and that seemed to work, but it is dripping again and tightening doesn't seem to help anymore. The garbage disposal is just to the right of the trap. Thank you, as always, for any advice.

Remove the coupling and check the copper pipe for a hole rotted through it.

Is there backfall on the piping?

The copper pipe is level heading into the wall, if that is what you mean.

There will always be water in the base of that connection because it goes from larger pipe to small. About the only way you can make that work is to put an eccentric reducing coupling on the pvc. That will keep the bottom of the pipes on the same plain.

Thanks everyone. I think I will take the trap off first to see if there's junk piled up in there, then pull off the Proflex coupling to check the copper pipe for holes, cracks, etc. Won't be able to get to this for another day or so, so any other thoughts or advice welcome.

Unless the copper is back pitched or has blockage, any ponding water will be on the PVC side of the coupling. Regardless of ponding or not, the coupling should not leak.

Is the leak coming out of the pic side or the copper side?

clean the condensate drain.

yes either your condensate line has blocked up causing the drain pan to spill over, or your coil has iced up and the ice is melting.

sounds very likely what steve said the lower side has holes...most likely there is an adversed slope on the copper pipe that's so in-perceptively small that some water (or drain cleaning chemicals) is trapped at that joint and eventually ate away the copper.
