My tank lid is dated Jan 25, 1974. The tank wouldn't quit leaking even after multiple tank ball (aka flapper) replacements. Then I did some reading. The primer hose which goes down the tube in the middle of the back of the tank was below the water level in the tank. The tank wasn't leaking around the tank ball at all. What was really happening was the water from the tank was being siphoned from the tank down through the primer hose. I cut the length of the primer hose so the lower end could not extend below the highest water level of the tank. After that, no more leak problems. I wasted a lot of time and water before finding this solution. I hope it helps others.
