 Connecting CPVC to Brass male
Author: Charliesal7 (WI)

Hi, this is a pretty basic question. I am connecting a new brass spicket to our current CPVC pipe. The guy sold me an adapter for it but I am unsure if I should be using Teflon tape or putty or nothing. any help would be great. This is what I bought:

Thanks!

You should use one with a metal thread along with tape or pipe joint compound

Yeah that looks like a more appropriate connector. Do you think the other piece will work? I am ashamed to admit that I got impatient yesterday and just used pipe dope and used that one. I didn't get a notification that anyone replied to my thread otherwise I would not have. The guy at the store obviously gave me the wrong part. Do I need to take the other one off or do you think it will be okay?

the danger of a metal male threaded fitting screwing into a plastic female fitting is cracking the much weaker plastic female fitting.
male pipe threads taper from small at the end to bigger further on up.
obviously the deeper the male threads go into the female fitting, the more stress there is on the female fitting.
there is no rule that says don't do it.
there is however common sense that says, don't use a 2 foot wrench to tighten the joint.

tighten a stainless steel worm clamp over the exterior MODERATELY - cheap insurance

For cpvc carrying hot water never ever use a cpvc female adapter like you purchased. Instead use one as packy suggested.

As far as using teflon tape on plastic fittings some manufacturers state not to use teflon tape.

Caution when using pipe dope ... be sure to read the label to make sure the pipe dope can be used on cpvc as some pipe dope is only for metal fittings and can weaken plastic fittings.

The photo of the female CPVC fitting you posted uses a rubber washer to make the seal against the male threaded end just like a garden hose. No tape or dope is recommended.
The metal/plastic version is best. The metal can be brass or stainless steel.

Actually if it is proper to use Teflon on CPVC I suggest skipping all of the above and instead use a Male x male CPVC Adaptor or PVC close nipple so you can screw the Female valve on. The metal valve will not split and you should have a perfect joint connection. Unless I misunderstood the question, this is my solution. I will add that I am not familiar with all of the fittings for CPVC so take this suggestion with a grain of salt....

My understanding is the OP has a valve with a brass male end.

Threading a metal male end into a female plastic fitting is not a good idea. Too loose and it may leak, too tight and it may crack the plastic fitting.

Also need to make sure your valve is secured to the wall. You don't want to yank or tuck a hose on a valve connected to unsecured plastic piping. May be a silcock?

Bern has a good idea and I like Sums reply. I never use plastic female screwed fittings when for example on a water service where I would use PVC for the main line from the meter, I never connect to the copper leading up to the main house shutoff valve (ball valve) with female PVC, strictly Male PVC because the PVC can't crack the Brass or copper Female fitting. Hope this is not too confusing...
