I have a minor leak in the line coming into my house . It is inside the house before the meter. It appears to be the main shut off valve that is leaking.How do I shut off the water in order to fix the problem ?

There should be a valve at the meter, if not call your water provider sometimes they will freeze the line just long enough to change out the valve. install a Ball Valve

depends on what the leak is ?
if it is a pinhole then there are lots of clamping devices that will fix if for a long, long time.
post a picture so someone can advise the best way to fix the leak.
to answer your question, the city/town DPW can shut your water at the sidewalk.

He said he thought the leak was from the valve. I would replace the valve then see if there needs to be more work to fix the problem. If the valve is a gate valve I would definitely replace it.

I agree. there was a time when gate valves, because of no flow restriction, were desirable.

Also ball valves were quite expensive, and outside the budget for most homes. Call the water company, since the leaking water is NOT going through the meter, that pipe and valve, may be their responsibility.

Around here everything on the street side of the meter is verbotten; we are allowed to do nothing but call the water company. My problems have always been on the house side.
