 belly in sewer line
Author: peter9949 (CO)

our house was built in the 60's, it has a cast iron sewer line in the basement covered with concrete. Has it scoped to find out there is a belly or slight sway downward in sewer line, plumber said this is typical of old homes but the downward belly should be something we keep an eye on. Question is, "is this a typical problem in old houses or should we get place entire line or just section that is bellied?

The age of the CI would cause me to replace it with ABS so I could sleep at night. Bellies eventually cause a stoppage.

my question is, how long has it been since the sewer line was snaked clean?
if the belly causes a re-occurring problem that needs constant attention then change as much as necessary.
if it has been years and years without anyone even knowing the belly was there, change it only if it is leaking.

"Bellies" can have many different causes, and sometimes they CANNOT be just replaced or repaired without affecting a much longer section of piping.

I have you beat by 17 years and was still installing it in 1969, in Chicago. Never even saw No-hub or plastic until 1972 in Phoenix

I actually started in the boston navy yard in 1963 as a pipefitter.
we did use plastic pipe for the deck scuppers but it was not used for residential plumbing until years later.

My 1963 house has cast iron sewer pipes to the street. Video shows a somewhat angular belly. Since the entire span is under the home or under an aggregate concrete patio, we have resolved to "keep an eye on it." Requires snaking every few years.
