I am trying to change this Moen shower valve but for the life of me it will not come out. What am I doing wrong? It’s probably a Moen 1222 or 1225 or something like that. I used channel locks and then a vice grip and tried pulling out but it would not budge. Yes, I fully removed the retaining clip that is shown partially inserted in the picture when I was trying to pull it out.
Should I have bothered to rotate the stem fully clockwise or counterclockwise before pulling? Don’t know how that would make a difference but I saw that on a YouTube video on a Moen cartridge removal after I put everything back and thought I would ask. It’s for a customer and I may return in a week or two if I think I can get it out successfully this time.

if you are going to do this professionally, you ought to invest in a decent 'moen cartridge puller'.
mine is like this.

Theoretically, when you rotate the valve the two "ears" should climb the ramps and start its extraction. In practice, it seldom works. You either need a puller to jack it out, or remove the two ears so you can rotate the cartridge with a puller.

What two ears are you referring to?

The two white plastic ones that hold the cartridge in the proper orientation.
