Pipe noise with loss of hot water pressure
Author: Neville (Canada)

I have been having an issue for the last 6-8 weeks with banging in pipes. It started at the washer so I installed hammer arresters on both hot and cold lines. The noise then seemed to develop when a first floor toilet was flushed and now when a second floor toilet is flushed. The pipes bang when the toilet is first flushed and begins to fill. At the same time we lose hot water pressure. This happened when the banging started at the washer as well. Once the toilet stops filling there is usually a second bang and the hot water pressure comes back.

The only recent change to any plumbing was to install a new fill valve assembly in one of the toilets. That was either in December or early January.

Any help would be appreciated.

couple things come to my mind.
check your water pressure with a simple gauge that screws onto a hose thread.
also, do you have a recirculating line on the hot water ?

Water pressure is normal. Cold water pressure at tap has not changed. Hot water tank is standard 40 gallon no recirculation.
