Leaving your home for extended periods and turning off water
Author: stoub (NJ)

I am trying too determine the best approach to shutdown the water in my condo when leaving for a week at a time.
I shut off the water at the main valve. Do I then need to open 1 or more faucets prior to leaving the condo after turning off the water. Can I just shut down the water from the main valve and then leave the condo?
When turning the water back on when returning, can I just turn on the water at the main valve? IS there a process to follow when turning the water back on?

on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the most difficult, your job is about a .01 .
yeah, it is that easy.
if you water heater is electric, shut off the breaker (to save energy)
if it is gas, turn the knob to pilot or vacation.
opening a faucet or two serves no purpose but neither does it do any harm. so consider that optional.

open one faucet to ensure that the shut-off valve actually shuts off completely

What's your feeling on cycling the pressure on brittle CPVC? Maybe better to turn off main and keep pressurized?

Not to sound like a smart---, but if the piping has gotten a point where you have to be afraid of it bursting when the washing machine shuts off.......it's time to stay home and have the place re-piped.

Speaking of washing machines.............Always shut the valves to them , when you go away.
