New Hot Water Heater- Need Chimney Piping?
Author: ItsMe (NJ)

Hello -
I need a new hot water heater and just want to replace it. Is it necessary to get the chimney lined? Is there any chance that it wouldn't be already?

Thank you.

if it is all alone into a masonry there is no chance it is lined to the right specs.
they don't want a 3 inch gas flue venting an 8 x 8 chimney.

Thank you for your response. How would we know if it is lined? Can you tell just by looking at the outside of it?

superman with his ex-ray vision can tell from the outside. we mere mortals must look inside. either thru the opening the flue pipe goes into or up on the roof looking down.

Thanks for getting back to me. Someone barely looked at my hot water heater and said I needed a new chimney liner. After the fact, I wondered how he could tell what was on the inside from quickly looking at it. Thanks for clarifying.

Are you switching from oil-fired equipment to natural gas?
