desuperheater and electric hot water heater
Author: Paul75 (WA)

Hi,

New here. Some time ago, I installed a geothermal heat pump furnace in my house. I opted to get the optional desuperheater for hot water production and have yet to hook it up. My current electric water heater is 20 years old and needs replacement. Any recommendations for an electric water heater and simple desuperheater hookup? Desuperheater supply/return lines are plumbed and capped to water heater location. The desuperheater would supplement the electric heater. I would rather not have two tanks as space is limited. Is there a hybrid electric heater (without integral heat pump) that can utilize my existing desuperheater from my geothermal furnace?

Thank you. Paul

paul, a few years ago I plumbed a new house but a separate company did the geo-thermal.
I do remember piping the water heater(I supplied) like this diagram.
as with your house, the company left me a couple of stubs to tie into the conventional water heater.
simply stated, a tee in the cold water supply and a tee at the drain valve.
sorry but I don't remember much about what I did?
any circulators, check valves and controls were all done by the geo-thermal company.
here is a drawing I found on the internet.

Thanks Packy. Exactly what I was looking for. Did you use a standard gas or electric water heater? Did you use it as just a holding tank with the desuperheater supplying all hot water or was water heater used with gas or electric and desuperheater just supplementing the heater?

Thanks again. Diagram very helpful. Paul

I had a few conversations with the owners, the geothermal people and the resident expert at my supply house.
we came up with this bad boy. propane gas and extremely efficient.
they had 4 1/2 baths one of which had an 80 gallon whirlpool tub.
they also had a shower that was like a car wash.
so no ordinary heater would suffice.
there was no chimney available so the heater had to be a model that could be side wall vented.

I don't remember exactly but I think the heater cost me around 2500 dollars.
BTW, their geothermal system cost them 69K (that included heat and AC)
anyway, this is the heater I used. the geothermal was used to supplement the gas.
