Shower head and up pipe in cold exterior wall
Author: spierce1 (CO)

Hello. I know that the issue of putting plumbing in exterior wall is well documented no no but ....

I'm planning on putting the shower controls in an interior wall, but would like to put the shower head and piping (only) in the cold wall. Does the the water automatically drain from the shower head plumbing as not to freeze. If not how can plumb in an automatic valve to drain the show head piping when the water is turned off. ??

Thanks Steve

No, it does not. Put a tub diverter spout in the wall under the valve about 18" high. That will drain the water and also let you get the water hot before turning it on to the shower head.

if you use a tub and shower valve that sends water to the tub spout and to activate the shower you pull up on a button, most of those self drain when the water is shut off.
the spout can be mounted down low and used as a 'toe tester'.
make sure to check that the model you choose is self draining.

Can you do one of those “rain” showers on the ceiling, and keep pipes overhead instead of in that wall?
