 Moving Sink in Bathroom
Author: Tomos84 (NJ)

I am remodeling a bathroom and need to move the sink drain line over (through two 2x4s) and was hoping to also get rid of the soffit that has the vent pipe through it. Is it ok to drill the holes in the 2x4s to run the 1 1/4” drain/vent pipes? My worry is there will only be about 3/4” of 2x4 left on each side of the pipe hole and it’s a load bearing wall. Is that ok? Could I notch one side and use a stud shoe? Thanks in advance!

1. WHERE are you going to find 1 1/4" drain fittings
2. The studs are under compression loads and you are only drilling one or two of them. No problem.
3. You WILL have a problem if you notch them that deeply.

1. I’ll probably have to convert to 1.5” once I get to the sink.
2. It’s only 2 of them on the drain side but 3 of them on the vent side so it’s that entire 7ft wall. And I know it’s under compression but there will only be a little bit left of material after I cut the hole out of the middle.
3. Good to know, I won’t notch out.

It would be up to the inspector whether you have to use stud shoes, although I have only used them on ONE job in 65+ years.
