Water heater relief pipe to drain?
Author: Marko1 (MO)

I was going to run pvc from h2o heater relief valve to drain line...is that ok? Or why not? (No floor drain) thanks...I have already run a.c. condensate line into drain, is that ok?

I know it should probably be cpvc rather than pvc but couldn't find in 1" dia. and figured a discharge would be rare and unlikely and if it happened would be a very short momentary burst rather than continual flow...

1. You only need 3/4"
2. sometimes it is a long term continuous flow
3. If it is hot water it will melt the PVC
4. use copper or CPVC

Did you provide an air gap?

For the T-PRV: a visible air gap AND a (receptor) pipe and trap sufficiently large to accept FULL FLOW of POTENTIAL discharge.

strange but as restrictive as mass codes are, they just want the discharge left 12 inches above the floor.
enough to get a bucket under.

By air gap does that mean like a studer vent?

i laymans terms...
an air gap just means a space between the discharge and the pipe you are connecting it to.
this prevents any bad water from backing up into the discharge.

It is not a big deal with a condensate drain, because you do NOT drink the water where it comes from.

it would take a very unique set of circumstances for a water heater discharge pipe to syphon water back into the potable water system..

the discharge of a T-PRV must be VISIBLE ~ may NOT be directly connected to a drain

even if run 'outside' the discharge MUST be visible

yeah, there's also something in the code about discharging water hotter than 180 into a sewer ??

And WHO has ever installed a cool down receptor for a water heater discharge line.

ME ME ME

I actually HAVE installed one.

Albeit it was called a 'heat-exchanger blow-down flash tank'.

Seriously!
