Typically, modern-day faucets and shower valves are serviced by replacing a cartridge. Our municipal water supply has enough calcium in it that deposits often make it impossible to remove the bonnet to replace the cartridge. And, with many single-lever faucets (ours are Kohler) it is a problem to grip the faucet body to prevent it from turning without damaging it when trying to get that bonnet off. Heat is not an option because the innards are plastic and rubber. Anyone have a magic spell or suchlike to deal with the calcium crust?

Usually, you are going to replace the "innards" so damaging them is not a problem.

For THIS person, that is locking the barn door after the horse has escaped.

on my "cadillac" jobs, i always remove bonnets on valves and apply silicone grease. yeah, that goes for ball valves as well.

Again, that is absolutely of no benefit to this person who is trying to fix one where that WAS NOT DONE.
