 faucet aerators collecting unknown material
Author: JMO44 (WI)

We bought our newly built house 6 years ago. I don't know when it started but our master bath vanity oil-rubbed bronze faucets began to accumulate some dark (black or very dark brown) string-like gunk. The manufacturer assures me it is not from the faucet or the ORB coating, and I agree. It's a closed system. I have to clean the screens on the aerators every few weeks. I have replaced the aerators and checked the faucets, supply lines, washers, etc. I t keeps coming back. Our other faucets are seldom used, except the kitchen, and I didn't notice any build up on them until recently; then I saw the same problem. I had been unable to check our kitchen faucet due to its design until we recently replaced the kitchen faucet. I checked the old one and found the same gunk. A wet bar faucet in the lower level is used seldom but I recently found it, too, had the build-up. I drain and clean the water heater yearly and we do not have a water softener (no need for one). Plumbers I have informally questioned have no clue. Anybody want to take a shot? Thanks.

If you're on well water, have it tested for manganese and iron. There are bacteria that feed on water containing these that produce black, greasy, slimy deposits. If that's the case, you'll have to do filter the water to remove these minerals.

If any of your pvc water lines are exposed to the sun it could be black algea. Just a shot in the dark. Good luck solving and remedying your situation.
