 Whole House Trap Vent Question
Author: LI Guy (IN)

Finally getting around to remodeling the half bath and in the process I need to replace the toilet flange and re-route the pipe. It looks like this was added sometime in the 80's and as you can see from the pic, the waste was plumbed into what used to be a cleanout.

The original waste has a vent on the house side of the whole house trap, it seems like whoever added this waste line added a second whole house trap but no vent. There is no roof stack on this half bath line, the toilet is vented via an AAV under the lav sink.

Should I add another vent on this second waste line on the house side of the second whole house trap? If so does it have to be right next to the trap like original one or can it be further up the line?

I'm having some performance issues with the toilet in this half bath and am wondering if not having a vent on the whole house trap could be a contributing factor.

Definitely can contribute to the performance of the toilet working properly. AAV's in my opinion is the scourge of the plumbing industry, but they have their purpose in situations that cannot be addressed without major expense.

There's absolutely no way to turn up a vent and head towards the roof for this half bath?

So the old cast iron portion you see services the 2 upstairs baths. That main continues up through the roof as a vent stack, and each bathroom group is vented by an AAV under the lav sinks. The 1/2 bath serviced by the new PVC section has no roof vent. I know AAVs aren't ideal but the house was built in 1917, and has a hipped roof with no gable ends, so getting a vent up an outside wall is not easy.

What is the purpose of these whole house traps if your individual fixtures are installed with individual traps?

Seems to me your two whole house traps can siphon each other and break the seal.

Sum, the whole house trap is required by NY code and is not a favorite of guys that post here. Good point having 2 that may siphon each other and one of the reasons I'm looking for opinions here.

I would love to read in the NY code where it says a whole house trap is required? and if there is any discussion on the theory behind it. Rat control? Does NY use the UPC as a starting point?

Seeing how New York City's plumbing revolution got the ball rolling with code and code changes I would be surprised if it still is a requirement. But I'm finding I'm wrong a lot lately winking smiley.
