Happy New Year All! When I am away from home for more than a couple of days, I turn off my gas-fired hot water heater and close the shut-off valve in the basement where the water line enters the house. When I return, whether after 3 days or a couple of weeks and open the water valve, I can hear the water run for 15 to 20 seconds before it stops. I then open each faucet and a lot of air exits before the water runs without hissing or spitting. I do not turn the hot water system back on until after I go through this process. How does so much air get in the system, and can anyone recommend changes to prevent this from happening? Thanks in advance!

situation is normal
hot water will 'absorb' more air than cold water
when hot water in tank cools down the (formerly) entrained air will rise
