 proper gas WH venting
Author: NP16 (OR)

Just read a procedure list for installation of a gas water heater.
It says "make sure the WH is venting properly"

Obviously hugely important!

what is your procedure/s for this beyond a visual inspection?

Make sure you comply with the correct size for your model WH and material and proper clearances for the structure material.Lastly the height thru the roof or length through a wall.

"make sure the WH is venting properly"...
i guess they want you to hold something smoking next to the draft hood and fire the water heater.
there should be no puff back when it lights and it should draft nicely when running.
they certainly can't want a homeowner to know what the gas codes are ..

if the existing water heater has a vent that is brought through the wall into a brick chimney and a new installation is made does the new water heater have to be vented by itself and the old connection to the brick chimney abandoned?

if the new water heater is the only appliance vented into a brick chimney, then it is considered an "orphan" appliance and as such the chimney must be lined with an appropriately sized liner.
3 inch water heater vent into an 8 x 8 chimney can be problematic.

so either way it's a lot of work to bring a gas water installed in a basement up to code.
I have a HVAC contractor I can refer this work too.

thanks Packy and SrLoren for your thoughts on this. much appreciated.
