We moved into a new one floor home six weeks ago. When we run water in the bathroom sinks, we get a sewer smell. The strongest smell comes from the left sink and it comes AFTER We run the water for about ten seconds. It does not matter if we run the hot or cold water. If we smell the drain in the shower, we get a sewer smell. We do NOT get a sewer smell from the drain in the tub. We had the plumber come and he said the plumbing was put in correctly and vented correctly. He said the smell may come from the fact that we are on a town sewer that is new in our development. Could this be the reason for the smell? Looking for advice on what to do next. Thank you.

Cannot tell you what the "real" problem is, but if the plumbing was installed correctly, it is NOT because of the sewer system. The reason for proper plumbing is to keep odors like that OUT of buildings.

call the plumbing inspector..
either the plumber does not know what he is doing or he is being dishonest with you.

Take a flashlight and look down the drain and see if there is any standing water. It could possibly not have P trap on the shower
